Google Terminates Advertising Agreement with Yahoo

November 5th, 2008 | Joe | Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing

This evening I received a notification from Yahoo that Google has terminated the advertising agreement between the two companies. I’ll let the actual announcement speak for itself (see below):

Dear Advertiser,

We wanted to reach out to you directly regarding Google’s decision, announced earlier today, to terminate the advertising services agreement that the companies announced in June. Yahoo! continues to believe in the benefits of the agreement, and is disappointed that Google has elected to withdraw from the agreement rather than defend it in court. Google notified …

Watch Out for Yahoo’s Content Network

October 29th, 2008 | Amber | Content Network, Yahoo! Search Marketing

We’ve mentioned before that you can’t have the “set it and forget it” attitude when it comes to managing PPC accounts. While reviewing my Yahoo! account a few weeks ago, I noticed that we had generated a ton of extra clicks and spend with zero conversions via the content network, which was completely out of the norm.  At the time, I went ahead and paused the content network in that one particular ad group. However, the next day I saw the same thing in two more ad …

Yahoo! Improves Content Match and Assumes Our Performance Will Improve Too

October 13th, 2008 | John | Content Network, Yahoo! Search Marketing

One thing is certain, when Yahoo! launched the new Search Marketing platform (aka “Panama”), it signaled the death of Content Match. At least as I knew it. Before the upgrade, I generated pretty substantial results (in terms of traffic/conversions generated). After the upgrade, the big CM went belly up. So, it’s with a grain of salt that I take in Yahoo!’s optimistic announcement of their Content Match improvements. My skepticism aside, I’m actually intrigued (and somewhat hopeful) that this is true. If Yahoo! has indeed improved Content Match, I may very well begin …

Tips on Uploading Google Campaigns into Yahoo

July 29th, 2008 | Amber | Tools, Yahoo! Search Marketing

lightbulbA while back I wrote on how to take an export of your Google Adwords campaigns and use the Yahoo Third Party Converter Tool to bulk upload into Yahoo. While the process itself is fairly simple, a lot of people are still running into problems. In order to be successful at bulk uploading your Google Adwords campaigns into Yahoo, first you must have the import feature in Yahoo before you can use the Convert third party campaigns tool. In order to get the import feature simply call your Yahoo rep and ask for it. …

The Rogue Gardener: Yahoo’s Ad Profiling May Kill Your Weeds And Your Roses

July 25th, 2008 | Joe | Yahoo! Search Marketing

As I reported earlier, Yahoo has instituted a new program called Ad Profiling. In a recent article at the YSM Blog, they liken your YSM account to a garden, and Ad Profiling is the gardener you didn’t hire to kill the weeds, even if it means sacrificing the roses. What does that even mean? Read on.

Upon closer review of the Yahoo article I have some questions, comments and declarations. First, lets review the core intention of Ad …

Yahoo! Ambassador Program to be Terminated

July 23rd, 2008 | Amber | Yahoo! Search Marketing

Don’t worry, all that studying for the Yahoo! Ambassador test hasn’t gone to waste completely. Even though Yahoo announced today that they’re terminating their Ambassador program, you have until July 31st to complete the training and take the test to become eligible to be an Ambassador only if you have already registered. Once certified, landing pages will be delivered to new Ambassadors no later than August 31, 2008.

This is the explanation we got from Yahoo on why the program is being terminated:
The Yahoo! Ambassador program was specifically developed to help marketers drive sales leads to their clients. For …

Yahoo Can Still Alter Your PPC Account And This Time You Can’t Opt Out

July 14th, 2008 | Joe | Yahoo! Search Marketing

If you are running a Yahoo search marketing campaign: you have to read this post. Don’t mean to cause a panic, but this is import folks.

Last month I reported that Yahoo was going to automatically optimize your search marketing campaign without you. Just last Friday I ranted on how Yahoo’s new market reserve price killed one of my campaigns. The hits just keep coming as I unearthed a new, highly-questionable tactic employed by Yahoo: Ad Profiling.

The background: I was doing …

Yahoo Reserve Market Price Killed My Campaign

July 11th, 2008 | Joe | Bid/Budget Management, Yahoo! Search Marketing

Back in February, Yahoo announced that they would be instituting a reserve market price for their keywords. Basically, this means they now have minimum bid standards for their keywords. This seems like a reasonable tactic to employ to ensure the quality of advertising within their paid listings. For the most part, this new system hadn’t seriously affected our campaigns until yesterday when many of my “main” keywords for one of my clients were increased by approximately 400%.

When I received the notice of this change I called my Yahoo Representative

It’s Alive! Beware of the Search Beast Named “Yahoogle”

June 16th, 2008 | John | Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing

Yahoogle!

Ok, so I’m about 4 days late breaking this news, but I just have to share my 2 cents. Last Thursday, Google announced that they had reached a deal to share their AdSense for Search and AdSense for Content with Yahoo!. Holy crap, the Yahoogle beast is alive. The number 1 and number 2 search giants are now officially in cahoots with each other. Times they are a-changin’.

This deal leaves Yahoo! with complete autonomy as a company, and grants them the power to choose to what extent they use …

Yahoo Is Going to Automatically Optimize Your PPC Account Without You

June 2nd, 2008 | Joe | Yahoo! Search Marketing

I received an email this weekend from Yahoo saying that they were updating their Terms & Conditions for their search marketing accounts. However, within the email they didn’t say exactly what was updated, so I went ahead and asked my Yahoo Representative for a quick summary of what has been changed (side note, my Yahoo Representative is great: he always has speedy, thorough email responses). In summary, Yahoo is going to optimize your PPC account without prior knowledge of or approval by advertisers.
The one major change that is important to Yahoo advertisers is listed under the “Sponsored Search and Content …
