Any validation? Tools should be free but genuinely workable.

I use compete.com every single day, and while it is not perfect, it gives me a great angle when looking at competitors. The keyword and referral data helps me build out my clients' keyword lists and understand which affiliates and partners are sending their competitors the most traffic.

Not perfect but definitely valuable if you know what to do with the reports.

@Kyle, Eddy, and Tom, yes, I have heard also that the competitive reporting tools are somewhat inaccurate - however if everyone's numbers are off I still think it can give you an idea of where you are in comparison to competitors - and the keyword numbers may be off, but if you can find new keywords from what your competitors are using - you can at least try it in your account and see how well it works for you. Personally, I think all free analytics tools or competitive analysis tools are somewhat inaccurate! Thanks for your comments - I appreciate the feedback!

Yeah Compete has the same issues as any competitive tool (no data for unpopular sites, sometimes wildly inaccurate data) but I really really like their referring sites and destination sites features. As you said referring sites can be a great way to find sites to buy traffic from (via the content network or just a one to one buy) and looking at where people are going after they visit a site can provide some really interesting insight.

As with all these competitor comparison sites/apps I've only ever been able to get data if the client or competitor is popular in terms of traffic etc, compete.com was no different, I could only get data for one of my clients.

I have actually found this service to be very inaccurate. I have compared to many of my clients, as well as my companies info, and have found it to be way off (especially the statistics).
