I really agree with Kristin ads in their own language are not effective. They must make it english so that many may understand what they're saying.

The other thing to point out here is that when you're targeting international users, where possible you should really have content on the site in that language. The Google translator is nice but unless you're using it to translate your entire site, there's not much sense in writing ads in those languages. In the past I've seen that most users who search in another language simply bounce as soon as they don't see that language on the landing page.

Very Good post, Joe. I wrote a similar one not too long ago since there isn't a lot of good material out there regarding foreign PPC campaigns. I think there are 2 great points you make...

"Creating campaigns for the countries that are currently generating the most leads with the lowest CPL. And we’ll eventually create campaigns for each country we want to target."

This absolutely works. In fact I actually apply this strategy to some of my US clients where we target different states or cities with specific campaigns. "Geo-campaigning" not only helps control the settings, but let's you control your spend for each location as well. That gives you much more influence on the bids and ROI.

However, I think you say it best when you say...

"However, good campaigns can always perform better."

And that is the heart of what we as SEM'ers do.

Fantastic explanation Joe. My guess would be that 99% of AdWords customers don't understand language and geotargeting to this depth. If you're going to venture into foreign waters, make sure you have good help.
