@ Neil,

You're absolutely right in that there are negatives of using DKI. This post was centered simply on how to use it. As with any available PPC tool, DKI requires testing to ensure it's effectiveness.

If you are using DKI as a crutch for having poor account structure, yes DKI can lead to poorly written ads. I have run DKI in tightly themed ad groups with a DKI test ad - and have actually seen the CTR increase with DKI. My point being, don't assume a tool is useless - test before you pass judgement. And as for sales copy/performance tracking - if you are using a 3rd party tool like Google Analytics, it really shouldn't matter. You will still be able to track your metrics whether you use DKI or not.

You fail to point out the negatives of using DKI…

1) DKI doesn’t increase the revelancy of your ad.
2) It can lead to poorly written ads.
3) Tracking sales copy changes and performance becomes difficult

John,

Another great article. There is a host of unintended consequences that may result in using Dynamic Keyword Insertion, Mark Curtis covered it here in his second post on Funny AdWords: http://www.roirevolution.com/blog/2007/12/funny-adwords-contest-round-2.html
