Thank you so much for the analysis .. I was really scratching my head when I realised I have to bid 4 to 5 times higher when I move a site to managed placement. So I search the web and found your analysis .. now, it all explains.. thanks.

I concur. We have not gotten managed placements to work either for our clients. It's a huge disappointment because I think of automatic / managed like broad / exact. But for whatever reason, Google doesn't allow us to promote broad match successes to exact match placements and get activity.

One question that I have that may affect this: Would we be better off adding the individual page URL rather than the domain URL? I've been adding the domain each time and think I might be better off citing a specific managed "Page" rather than a whole url. Will try that...

Just look what you've done, Jessica - now I'm curious whether Google systematically takes advantage of the information that we have given it to benefit itself to the exclusion of our interests in other areas besides PPC.

I think one of the underlying takeaways from your article is more significant than the actual surface point: be careful what information you provide Google with, and consider how they will (ab)use it.

I have my campaigns set up on a cost/conversion basis instead of CPC. One of the drawbacks (as far as I can see) with the cost/conversion pricing method in relation to the Content Network is that you can't set different cost/conversion rates for managed vs. non-managed Content Network sites. Or maybe I'm missing something?

This is really interesting food for thought - I hadn't thought of it that way. I have a client who does really well on certain sites, so I had recently changed over to managed placements, and only those that have resulted in conversions. It had never occurred to me to analyse whether the CPC is now going up. Off I go to check now! Thanks for this.
